Road safety catchphrases still relevant

Road and car safety adverts have changed considerably over the years. While some of the older ad campaigns have not aged particularly well, many key catchphrases are still widely recognised.

Clunk, Click, Every Trip

In the Clunk, Click, Every Trip campaign, DJ Jimmy Saville used visually shocking experiments to encourage us to wear seat belts. Although the public information films featuring Saville only ran throughout the early 1970s, the catchphrase endured until 1993.

Always use the Green Cross Code

Between 1975 and 1990 Green Cross Code Man frequently graced our screens along with his trusty, Dalek-like companion.

After advising children on how to improve their road safety he gave the stark warning: ‘Remember, I won't be there when you cross the road. So always use the Green Cross Code.’

Later, Green Cross Code Man was succeeded by the heavily-quiffed, glam rocker Alvin Stardust. Stardust would wander along busy streets pointing out children who didn’t look before crossing the road. He would then exclaim furiously: ‘They must be crackers!’ Although these images and catchphrases might amuse us now, they hold fond memories for many people and their messages are as vital today as they ever were. Road safety is too important to just be part of a nostalgia trip.

Stop, Look, Listen

Unfortunately, accidents happen and while it’s important to heed the advice of the nation’s favourite Hedgehog family and always; ‘Stop, Look and Listen’ before crossing roads, it’s equally important for drivers to prepare for the worst by ensuring they have the right car insurance.
